Facebook (NASDAQ: META), a product of Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ: META), has announced that it will disclose information about Facebook users whose accounts may have been compromised due to security flaws in numerous iOS and Android applications.
Facebook reportedly disclosed that it had discovered 400 malicious Android and iOS apps designed to steal sensitive login information from users.
Facebook will notify nearly one million users regarding the status of their accounts and any security issues.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: NASDAQ: AAPL) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) notified Meta that suspicious apps had been removed from their respective stores after receiving a warning.
Bloomberg quotes David Agranovich, director of global threat disruption at Meta, as saying that cybercriminals will use similar themes to deceive users and steal their accounts and information because they are aware of the popularity of these types of apps.
Agranovich continued, "If an app promises something too good to be true, such as upcoming functionality for another platform or a social media website, it likely has ulterior motives."
Facebook announced that it will disseminate information on how users can identify malicious apps and avoid being "re-compromised" by enhancing their ability to identify problematic apps.
Earlier in March, hackers posing as law enforcement unknowingly shared user information with Apple and Facebook.
In the middle of 2021, the two organizations provided information such as client addresses, phone numbers, and IP addresses in response to fictitious "urgent data requests."
